Dr. Venkatesh Panchapagesan is an accomplished finance professional and academic with over three decades of experience spanning research, policy, regulation, and capital markets. He is currently Professor of Finance at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB), where he also heads the Real Estate Research Initiative, driving applied research on housing, land markets, and real estate finance in India. His expertise bridges academic rigor with practical insights, especially across real estate, capital markets, and financial regulation.

Dr. Panchapagesan brings extensive boardroom and advisory experience across private, public, and regulatory domains. He currently serves as an Independent Director on the boards of Brigade Enterprises Ltd. (a publicly listed real estate developer), Zerodha Trustee Pvt. Ltd., and IIMB Innovations (a Section 8 company of the incubation centre at IIM Bangalore), and previously served on the boards of NSE IFSC Ltd., Gujarat Student Startup and Innovation Hub, and on key oversight committees of BSE and ICCL. His regulatory contributions are significant—he is presently a member of several expert and technical committees at SEBI, IBBI, IFSCA and the National Housing Bank, including chairing SEBI’s 2023 Working Group on Alternative Investment Funds.

As an academic, Dr. Panchapagesan has published influential research in top-tier journals on real estate markets, market microstructure, and financial regulation. His research has directly informed public policy and institutional practice, and he has consulted with organizations such as HUDCO, CapGemini, and various state and central government agencies. His thought leadership is also evident in widely read opinion pieces across The Hindu Business Line, Mint, and Business Standard on issues like land reforms, real estate transparency, and regulatory effectiveness.

His previous industry roles at Bridgewater Associates, the world’s largest hedge fund, and Goldman Sachs Asset Management have equipped him with a global perspective on investment strategy and market analytics, complementing his public policy and academic credentials.

Dr. Panchapagesan holds a Ph.D. in Finance from the University of Southern California and an MBA-equivalent Post Graduate Diploma in Management from IIM Calcutta, where he was awarded the Silver Medal for ranking second in his class. He also ranked 2nd All India in Chartered Accountancy and 5th All-India in Cost Accountancy, reflecting a consistent record of academic excellence.
